It started raining pennies. Every time I'd take a walk, copper glinted up at me. Sometimes I wondered if people just threw money out their car windows. They'd be laying in the dirt on the back roads I wandered, next to the sandal of the person in front of me at the grocery store, in my bathroom stall at Chipotle.
I got so good at spotting coin, it was as if I could sense the energy of it. Whoever I was with could walk by the same area and miss what my soul knew was there. I was becoming a master of seeing the unseen.
"What if every time we found a penny we counted it as $1,000?" I proposed to Jimmy one day after swooping up a sprinkling of cents on the sidewalk. Over a few months, we accrued millions. Combing the post car wash lot where odds and ends spit out on the pavement after the complimentary vacuum. Digging in the cracks underneath the Starbucks drive-through window. Scanning the carports of our apartment complex.
After seeing me beaming over pennies on several occasions, my mom handed me a tiny square envelope that read:
The Angel Penny
I found a penny today just sitting there on the ground.
I'm told it's a reminder that my Guardian Angel is around.
They toss them down from Heaven whenever we are down.
It's a way to make us smile and wipe away our frown.
So don't forget this little story of how the angels care.
This angel penny is a reminder that there are angels in the air.
Inside was a round clasp snuggly nestling a 1976 penny. At its top, a tiny cherub face with little angel wings rounding over each side. A new knowing tickled up my spine. Every penny at my feet was intentional. Every coin that crossed my line of sight was meant for me. And so much more was on the way.
