The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

Mar 2024

Rachel is a girl on the train, watching the world go by in a blur. At least after she’s downed a few canned gin and tonics and started in on the first, or second, bottle of wine. But when she’s lucid or painfully hungover, she sees the attractive couple in the home that looks toward the tracks and crafts an idyllic relationship in her mind’s eye. She makes up their names and professions, personalities and past history, grasping to recapture what she’s lost, like her home that happens to be on the same street, where her ex-husband now lives with the woman he had an affair with and their newborn baby. When someone in this small world goes missing, Rachel finds herself in the middle of the mystery, groping through memory loss from one too many. Well-meaning but unreliable, she internally battles between doing what’s right and slipping back into regrettable decisions during blackouts. With crumpled determination, she inserts herself into the case of the missing woman with the sense that she may know something about what happened to her. But when she eventually gets to the truth, she’ll be lucky if she survives it.
